What to expect during the Hiking Manaslu Circuit with Larke Pass?

The 16 days Manaslu Trek in Nepal starts with your arrival in the vibrant capital city of the nation, Kathmandu, and ends here with your final departure on the last day. Covering elevations from 600m to 5,100m, taking a round trip of Mount Manaslu, you will be immersed in a rich cultural and natural tapestry, with picture-perfect scenes on each turn. Lapubesi is the trek starting point to follow the trail that meanders along the bank of Budhi Gandaki River, eventually leading you to the challenging Larke Pass (5,106 m/16,752 ft) above sea level. The longest pass in Nepal, Larkya La, is not only very long but also pretty steep, which is placed at a high altitude that usually invites AMS (acute mountain sickness).

The top view is breathtaking and mesmerizing as the towering powers of Himlung, Larke, Annapurna, and the majestic Manaslu surround one in all its glory. And hereafter, it unveils the open valley of Bhimthang, welcoming into warmer air. Nestled among the stunning parade of peaks, it is one of the best stopping places for close-up views of the Manaslu Himalayan ranges before descending simultaneously towards Dharapani. The journey concludes with a scenic drive to Kathmandu via Besisahar, marking the end of this once-in-a-lifetime trek. To conclude, the Manaslu Trek is an adventure that promises to leave you breathless, both from its beauty and the sheer magnitude of the experience.

Where is the Manaslu Circuit Trek? How is it?

The Manaslu Circuit Trekking route is located in the Gorkha District of Nepal. Typically, it begins with a drive to Lapubesi, which is approximately 80-90 km/50-56 miles west of Kathmandu and encircles Mount Manaslu, the eighth-highest mountain globally at an altitude of 8,163 m/26,781 ft above sea level, in around two weeks of trek time. The journey is through one of the most remote, untouched, and restricted parts of the trans-Himalayan region of Nepal, resulting in a more secluded and pristine environment. As compared to the more commercialized Everest and Annapurna Circuits, the trek to the Manaslu Circuit stands out for fewer crowds and a more immersive trekking experience even during the seasons that are considered the peak trekking time in Nepal: spring and autumn.

It is why if you possess the true spirit of adventure, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is a must-experience journey at least once in your life. Everything from here is genuine and deeply connected to nature and culture, and its people flourished amidst the sky-high towering mountain ranges. Requiring a special permit, the trekking trails are tranquil in the solitude of the high mountains, promising an incredible escape from hassling city life.

Which are the cultures to see during the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek primarily enters through the Nupri region of Nepal, a hidden gem that only a few get to explore, steeped in Tibetan influence and rich cultural history that dates back to the century. As you trek along the ancient trade route between Nepal and Tibet through villages like Jagat, Samagaon, and Sambo, the Manaslu Circuit Trekking offers more than mountains and hills; it provides a scenic insight into the living testament to the deep-rooted heritages of Nepal. As you ascend higher and higher to reach Larkya La Pass, the cultural shift from Hindu to Buddhist is noticeable as you march past ancient monasteries, mani walls, prayer flags, and chortens instead of temples and ghats.

All of these along the route add much to the cultural dimensions, symbols of strong faith towards the relative deity guiding you through an extraordinary journey like never before. Teahouse stays amidst the Magar, Gurung, and Thakali, with a cultural and spiritual inclination to Tibetan Buddhism, provides you ample opportunity to witness and be part of the typical Himalayan lifestyle. Far from more tourist-centric areas, the traditional practices, including farming and animal husbandry, some in weaving, unchanged for centuries, charm everyone. Namaste brings joy to friendly locals, and for more immersive cultural insights and spiritual rejuvenation, a visit to Pungyen Gompa and Muktinath Temple as a part of the Manaslu Circuit Hiking possesses it all.

Can you spot wildlife on the way to Larkya La Pass, Manaslu Circuit Trek?

Yes, the Manaslu Circuit Trip in Nepal aims to reach Larkya La Pass (5,106 m) within the Manaslu Conservation Area, which is home to a wide variety of rare and elusive Himalayan wildlife, a sanctuary for snow leopards, grey wolves, musk deer, Himalayan Thar, and blue sheep. The Himalayan voyage progresses through diverse landscapes, giving you a good chance to spot diverse flora and fauna. Though sighting an elusive snow leopard might not be guaranteed, greatly influenced by individual luck, time of visit, and patience for rare and special experiences, it is not without passing by diverse ecosystems from dense forests to high-altitude deserts and wildlife adapted to it, a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, making Manaslu Circuit Trekking a must-do venture in 2025 and 2026.

If you are having trouble choosing an epic Himalayan holiday experience in Nepal, a trip to the Manaslu Circuit with Mountain Monarch is your way to go, where our guide introduces you to some of the best places to spot a wide range of Himalayan wildlife that you are excited about.

How is Larkya La Pass? What makes it an enthralling experience?

Larkya La Pass, which connects the Budi Gandaki River Valley to the Marsyangdi River Valley, is one of the major highlights of the Manaslu Circuit Trekking at an altitude of 5,106 m above sea level. It is also the highest and most dramatic point you will reach during this Himalayan voyage to take a round trip around Mount Manaslu (8,091 m), the eighth-highest mountain peak in the world. Ascending and descending from here might not be everyone's cup of tea. It involves moving forth rugged terrain for a long time that could be icy and snowy in winter, demanding a good level of physical fitness and mental resilience.

Exposure to high altitudes for a long time without proper acclimatization can lead to acute mountain sickness (AMS), where the unpredictable Himalayan weather adds much to challenges that tend to be more unfavorable in the afternoon than in the morning. But once you make it to the top, the sense of achievement makes everything worthwhile amidst the breathtaking panorama of sky-perching peaks, including Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and the Annapurna mountain ranges, followed by a close-up view of Mount Manaslu (8,163 m).

Is there any specific viewpoint to capture the best of Himalayan vistas on the Manaslu Circuit Trekking Trail?

Yes, several high-altitude viewpoints along the Manaslu Circuit Hiking routes are best known for unparalleled views of Mount Manaslu (8,163 m) and are Larkya La Pass (5,160 m), Pungyen Gompa, and Samdo Ridge. Along the way, as trekkers traverse through a variety of landscapes, from lush subtropical forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron and terraced farms in the lower elevations to alpine meadows, shimmering glacial valleys, and snow-bathed high mountain passes, these landmarks in comparatively higher altitudes reward you with awe-inspiring perspectives of Mt. Manaslu.

Followed by the sheer scale and beauty of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna mountain ranges, this Manaslu Circuit Hike is a visual retreat, with picture-perfect scenery in every step. The raw beauty of the Himalayas and a glimpse into the untouched wilderness of Tibet are primary draws for adventurers across the world.

Yes, though the spring and autumn from March to May and September to November are taken as peak trekking and climbing seasons in Nepal such as for Everest Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, Mera Peak Climbing, and Island Peak Climbing including Manaslu Circuit Trekking, much to the delight of trekkers trek to Manaslu Circuit is feasible in summer seasons as well. As most of the trekking is through the trans-Himalayan region in the rain shadow areas of Nepal that rarely experience rainfall even during the summer/monsoon season, the hike to the Manaslu Circuit is the right summer gateway to the Himalayas.

If prepared well for winter challenges like extreme cold, snowfall, and limited accommodation and food options, December to February can also be a fantastic time to experience the Manaslu Circuit. Otherwise, the spring and autumn seasons bring vibrant biodiversity, with the landscape blooming into a colorful natural and cultural tapestry. From September to November, autumn offers clear skies and excellent visibility, perfect for capturing stunning mountain vistas.

On food choices, teahouses offer you a variety of meals from traditional Nepali and Tibetan dishes like Dal-Bhat-Tarkari (refillable rice with lentil soup followed by seasonal vegetables), Thukpa, and Tibetan bread to some basic Western options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The best budget-friendly, hygienic, and nutritious option is to stick to Dal-Bhat-Tarkari for lunch and dinner, a staple Nepalese dish that is generally freshly prepared using locally grown organic ingredients.
