Difficulty and Physical Fitness for Base Camp with Poon Hill Hike

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is a moderate plus adventure, combining breathtaking views with a physical challenge that is both rewarding and achievable. Here is what to expect and how to prepare:

Trek Difficulty

This Annapurna sanctuary is at 4130 meters, and it takes around 10 days to complete the journey, with 5 to 7 hours of daily walking. The higher altitude challenge has less oxygen than the sea level. Walking on rugged terrain through terraced villages and subtropical to alpine forests with many ups and downs could challenge your body and mind. The unpredictable Himalayan weather sometimes increases the trek difficulty level.

Fitness Requirements

Anyone with average physical fitness and a positive attitude can enjoy this trek. Being physically fit not only enhances your experience but also ensures a safer, more enjoyable journey. Walking on snow and high-altitude trails is safe with proper preparation and guidance.

Preparation Tips:

Start training at least one month before the trek. Activities like walking, jogging, cycling, or simple cardio exercise help build stamina. Practice walking or running with a backpack on stairs or hills to simulate trekking conditions. Break in your trekking boots to avoid discomfort or blisters during the hike.

Cost Effective Adventure

We offer a modestly priced Annapurna Sanctuary Trek that includes most expenses, such as accommodation at hotels and teahouses, meals on the trek, transportation, a permit, and reliable guide and porter services.

Best Time to Hike the Annapurna Sanctuary with Poon Hill

Timing your trek can significantly enhance your experience. The best months for the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek are spring and autumn. Spring (March to May): Enjoy blooming rhododendrons and mild weather. Autumn (September to November): Mild temperatures with stable weather. Experience clear skies and stunning mountain views. The best alternative is to go on winter trekking in December. Be prepared for colder nights. December offers beautiful clear days, perfect for trekking, but ensure you have the right gear to stay warm.

Trip Permits, Gear, and Guides for Base Camp

Trekking Permit: The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek requires an Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit. We will ensure you have all the necessary travel documents and arrange your trekking permits.

Personal Gear: Trekkers must bring essential gear, such as Hiking boots, a day pack, and Warm clothing suitable for the trek. To make a hassle-free and cost-effective journey, we provide a sleeping bag and fleece liner, a warm jacket, and a trek duffle bag for use while hiking to the base camp of Annapurna.

Guides and Porters

We employ guides based on their prior job performance. All guides started with our company and were promoted after gaining the confidence to lead groups. How challenging is the Annapurna Sanctuary trek, and Who can join?

Mount Annapurna I (8091m) is the 10th highest mountain in the world. The hiking adventure to the southern Sanctuary base camp is the trip of a lifetime. This walking adventure is categorized as a moderate plus on its difficulty level and is achievable for anyone with good physical fitness. The highest elevation of this trek is 4120 meters, where the oxygen is about 30% less than the sea level. Trekking in Annapurna Sanctuary embraces walking ups and downs, so be prepared to ascend and descend on stone steps and well-trodden hiking trails. The standard walking hours are from 05 to 08, depending on your pace. A fit person in their teens to 70s can join this Annapurna Sanctuary Trek without earlier adventure experience. This trip is not for those with weak knees and angles or heart or lung issues.

Food and accommodation on the Annapurna Sanctuary trek

The tea houses will likely be packed on this Annapurna Sanctuary during the peak season. This region has very limited lodges due to the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) policy over environmental concerns. A single supplement is sometimes not viable on this hike due to the limited teahouse. We usually stay in private rooms with two separate beds and a shared restroom with sit-on toilets. Lodges are at their best, offering a cozy experience and their typical local environment. You have a variety of choices for food, from continental and Chinese to local food. Nepali Dal Bhat, Momo, pasta, thukpa, pancakes, noodles or vegetable soups, etc.

You can buy boiled water from the local teahouse. Alternatively, we suggest you bring the iodine water purification tablets or filters. You need at least two metal or plastic Nalgene bottles to have enough to last the day. Besides, the hot water we fill up at night after dinner serves as a hot pack, which you can use in your sleeping bag and drink in the morning when it is still warm.

Annapurna Sanctuary or Annapurna Base Camp

These are simply two names for the same trekking destination. The southern Base Camp of Annapurna is an excellent mountain sanctuary, thus known as Annapurna Sanctuary. The northern base camp is the actual launching pad for the expedition to the Annapurna peaks.

There might be alterations on the trekking trail in case of snowfall. Though winter days in December have mostly stunning sunny days, the chances of the temperature getting below the freezing point are probable. To capture the incredible beauty of Annapurna during winter, one should be well-equipped with winter gear and be well-organized mentally to confront the worst of chill weather circumstances. The unpredictable Himalayan weather changes rapidly from sunny days to a foggy or snowy day within a few hours.
